Typical of a number of British corporate identities from the late 60s, the British Steel logo, drawn by David Gentleman in 1966, was a simple but extremely memorable geometric symbol. The design was based on a satisfyingly economic 1:√2 proportion (used for the A series of paper sizes) and could be constructed straightforwardly with a ruler and a pair of compasses. It was, according to Gentleman himself, designed in a hurry after the client rejected the proposal of another agency. British Steel merged with Dutch rival Koninklijke Hoogovens in October 1999 and was renamed Corus (now part of Tata steel), consigning this particular masterpiece to the scrap heap. |
